Overview of Tawi Lodge

Tawi Lodge is set in the heart of its own 3,000-acre private conservancy and in one of the richest game areas in Kenya. Tawi Lodge is an eco award-winning lodge, combining unpretentious comfort with subtle accents of style coupled with traditional East African hospitality.

Set on Kenya’s south-eastern border with Tanzania., Amboseli is a place of ever-changing landscapes, from acacia woodland, giant palm forest, dusty dry lake beds, volcanic plains, to lush, cool, green swamps fed by the snowmelt of Kilimanjaro.

Cottages.

There are 13 individual guest cottages set on either side of the main lodge building; most cottages have a spectacular view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Tawi can accommodate up to 30 guests. All ensuite, each has a large lockable wooden chest for safekeeping of valuables, spacious hanging cupboards, and a fireplace. Cottage 7 is suitable for wheelchair access.

Lodge Comforts.

24 Hour Power (240v), supplied predominantly by solar power & backed up by generators. Phones, computers & cameras can be charged at any time. CPAP machines can be used at night & hairdryers can be used at certain times of the day. Free Wifi is provided in the main lounge area. Hot water in the cottages is solar heated & backed up by briquette burning water heating boosters. Sufficient power to operate a reverse osmosis & filtration system in order to be able to supply clean, safe drinking water for all guests. A solar-powered electric fence surrounds the lodge compound.

Sleep Well.

The lodge and cottages sprawl along the edge of dry acacia woodland with Mount Kilimanjaro standing proudly above. Elephants often pass right close by, gently allowing close absorption into their secret lives, from the comfort of the cottage decks. Each of the “elegantly rustic” cottages is richly appointed, most with incredible views looking out over the mountain, the cottages have spacious bedrooms, private decks, en-suite bathrooms, with both bathtub and shower each cottage has large, snug 4-poster beds.

Eat Well.

Inspired by the exotic ingredients and vibrant colors of East Africa, the team of chefs concocts innovative and tasty meals of fresh locally available ingredients. Delicious candle-lit dinners are served by the warmth of the fireplace, or under the stars, Kilimanjaro presiding as the backdrop. We aim to please Tawi and we love experimenting with new dishes, presentations, always aiming to create fresh, novel meals for any dietary requirements. Fresh organic homegrown veggies and greens are picked daily from our luscious lodge gardens. Everything we can make from the lodge kitchen we do, from yogurts, fresh juices, bread, and our breakfast cereals.

Cultural Visits

The local Maasai community welcomes guests to visit their authentic, traditional village. You learn about the traditional lifestyle of the Maasai. The local community nursery & primary school is also a fun spot to pay a visit.

Bush Walks.

A chance to stretch your legs, learn along the way the different traditional uses of the various plants and shrubs, the different animal tracks and signs, birdsong, trees, wild flowers, and insects. A chance to smell and hear the natural world.

Camel Walks

Explore more, a gentle way to see the conservancy in a different light. Up, high on the backs on our friendly 4-legged friends. Up close to the wildlife and feel the fresh Amboseli air.

Sundowners

A firm favorite on any safari and a lovely way to end the day. We have lovely spots dotted over the conservancy to watch the sunset in a spectacle of colour. Camp chairs are set, fire lit, and chilled drinks are served, all with Mt. Kilimanjaro as your background.

Bush Meals.

Have a bush breakfast or dinner out in the wilderness of the conservancy. Sit back and relax, immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of the wild as delicious meals are created in the bush kitchen.

Game Drives.

With access to both Tawi Conservancy and Amboseli National Park, game drives are fantastic. Game vehicles are open-sided, with camera charging facilities. Night game drives are available in the conservancy. Tawi guides are experts in their field, ready to share their extensive knowledge.

Dining.

All meals are served at the main lodge dining room or in the garden. At sunrise, trays of hot tea and coffee are brought to your cottages, a perfect wake-up call before your game drive! Enjoy the wilderness with a picnic breakfast or lunch which are also available, with prior notice. Our creative chef can cater to special dietary requirements, with advance notice.

What to Pack

Being cooler in the morning & evenings hours, so bring along a warm jacket. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing for hot late mornings & early afternoons. A swimming costume. Insect repellant & personal medication. A sturdy pair of comfortable walking shoes. A hat, suncream, sunglasses. A pair of binoculars. Camera (Spare camera batteries and memory cards, charging cable & adaptor to charge from 3-pin square power socket). Bring along dust covers or bags for your camera & binoculars. Full set of adaptors & cables to charge personal appliances from a 3-pin square power socket.

How To Get Here.

It is incredibly easy to get to Tawi. There are daily flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Amboseli Airstrip or by charter to Tawi’s private airstrip. Driving is an option too, the drive takes approximately 5 hours from Nairobi. Or by train (SGR), to Emali Station, then a road transfer by Tawi to the lodge (2 hours).
